8. Tour the Thimphu Festival (9 days). Your first night is spent in Paro, where you can enjoy the day exploring the city. The next four days you’ll spend at the famous Thimphu Festival. On Day 5 the tour heads to Wangdi across Dochula Pass (10,500 feet) to the valley of Wangdi Phodrang and Punakha. On Day 6 the group travels to Gangtey and Phobjikha valley, declared as the first ecotourism destination of Bhutan. This valley is the winter home of rare and endangered black-necked cranes, which migrate to Bhutan from Tibet. You can check out some of Bhutan’s wildlife here, including wild boars, barking deer, Himalayan black bears, red foxes, and leopards. On Day 8, you hike to Taktsang Monastery view point. Taktsang means “Tiger’s nest,” and it is built around a cave where they believe Guru Rinpoche meditated, clinging to a cliff at 3,000 feet above the valley floor. For the locals, this is a place of pilgrimage, and for us tourists, the view of the monastery is overwhelmingly spiritual. The legend says that Guru Rinpoche flew to the site of the monastery on the back of a tigress from Tibet and meditated in the cave there for three months. On Day 9, you head back home with a suitcase of unbelievable memories. Thimphu Festival Tour Package, Services International; www.bhutantravelinfo.com; arrive September 1.
